The music and editing seriously carried this movie, because without those it was so incredibly scant. This could—or even should—have been a thirty or forty minute short film. Something like a segment in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. The acting was fine. Nothing spectacular, because there was nothing to work with. Even the editor knew there wasn’t enough to work with, because he was reusing shots, and flipping them to try hiding it.

The acting was not fine. No. There was no reason for any of those characters to exist. What was Nic Cage’s arc? Other than to just be completely insane. The young guy riding off into the wilderness now that his story is complete. They did nothing. I get there’s a historical element to this, but, oh, man, it was just so incredibly boring. Euuugh. Uuuugh. Ugh. Overall solid aesthetics, scenery, sound… but we needed a story to carry something.

I concur. Who is this movie for? They obviously did their research for the time period. But it’s not based on specific historical events, so who is this for? It’s not a Western. It’s not a psycho thriller. It didn’t go far enough for either of those. Or that whole seasons things. I get they’re shooting the passage of time, but there’s no way they or their animals survived winter in the Rockies. I think it’s a case where Nic Cage takes any role.
